the last few years analysts have said that the security of cyberspace has become imperative, not only to ensure the growth of economies, but also to safeguard them against local and international threats that may be posed to by cybercriminals prowling the Internet.
With millions of Nigerians using the internet daily, digital technologies and internet have become the backbone of Nigeria’s economy.
However, network and information systems can be affected by incidents such as human mistakes natural events, technical failures or malicious attacks or hacking that are becoming very frequent and more complex by the day, experts say.
The new Cybercrime Act, which was signed on May 15, 2015, stipulates that, any crime or injury on critical national information infrastructure, sales of pre-registered Sim cards, unlawful access to computer systems, Cyber-Terrorism, among others, would be punishable under the new law.

ABOUT THE KEYNOTE SPEAKER
Mr Basil Udotai
Mr. Basil Udotai is the Managing Partner of Technology Advisors LLP, a specialty law practice that focuses exclusively on ICT.
He was pioneer Director and Head of the Directorate for Cybersecurity (DfC) at the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA). Before that appointment, he served as Coordinator of the Nigerian Cybercrime Working Group (NCWG), where he led the government’s first ever coordinated effort in creating both legal and institutional frameworks for computer security and critical information infrastructure protection in the country. Prior to that, he was Legal Adviser of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), a position he was appointed to after serving as Consultant and Lead Counsel to the Federal Government on the Government-wide Software Licensing Agreement with Microsoft Corporation, USA.
Acting as Technology Attorney and Consultant, Mr. Udotai has at various times drafted and reviewed proposed legislations, regulations, conventions and protocols for ICT agencies of governments and the National Assembly, as well as ECOWAS, African Union and the United Nations. He has advised many local and international organizations (both public and private organizations) on a wide range of legal issues as they affect ICT business, transactions and compliance. He is currently serving as Legal Consultant to the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) on the digital switch over (DSO) of Broadcasting in Nigeria.
Mr. Udotai obtained his Bachelor of laws (LL.B) and Master of laws (LL.M) degrees from the University of Lagos, Nigeria in 1991 and 1994, respectively. And other advanced law degrees and certifications in Europe and the United States.
Before returning to Nigeria, Mr. Udotai lived and worked in Washington, DC focusing on Technology Law in the areas of Technology Transactions, Privacy & Security, and Intellectual Property.
He is Chair of the ICT Committee of the Section on Business Law (SBL) of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).
