A fisherman on Friday killed a big Hippopotamus on the banks of the Benue River in Makurdi.
The killing of the endangered animal brought out quit a number of residences in the area as they came to catch a glimpse of the rare animal.
The fisherman who gave his name as Kar, told newsmen there were plenty other such animals in the river, and that particular animal had been causing problems for fishermen in the river for a while now.
A Makurdi residence named Sonia Ajoko who is a lawyer was not happy that an endangered animal had been killed by the fisherman. She said apart from the fact that they usually take a glimpse of the animals when they come out of the water; it is illegal for people to kill them as they were on the list of endangered animals.
She called on the Nigerian authorities to look into the circumstance that led to the killing of the endangered animal, and also protect all endangered species living in Nigeria.
